Románic Route
Muro Deroda - Obarra - Roda Isábena

This is a driving route of great religious and cultural value. We have chosen three unique places.
From the Hotel Peña Montañesa, Muro de Roda is situated at the top of the Gerbe Sierra. We access this religious-military compound from Tierrantona: The capital of the Fueva Valley. Only 4x4 vehicles past this point.
The original name is "Muro Mayor" which indicates its hierachical position over the rest of the fortresses.
The difference between "Muro" and "Murillo" is its placement. Muro is reserved for fortifications on the crests of mountains or sierras and Murillo for those on mountain-sides. Later when it became part of the Roda de Isábena bishopdom it was re-baptized.

The Santa María Romanic church (XII century) is a huge single construction finished with three apsis that make up its defensive system. There are dwelling ruins and a wall surrounding the church.
Our next stop on this medieval Ribagorza route is Roda de Isabena. The Obarra Monastery is at the end of the road through the Bonansa canyon.
The best route is from Tierrantona to Graus along the Troncedo road. In Graus we will take the Capella road quickly to Roda de Isabena. The views along this route are exceptional.

Most interesting to the visitor is how such a small village can have such an impressive cathedral. It used to be the head of the region both politically and religiously. Its urban layout is typically medieval, with narrow cobblestone streets plagued with Romanic arches. In the center of this maze stands the beautiful yet unknown cathedral. Built in the X century in honour of San Vicente, it has been reformed a few times. It has three crypts under its three buildings and its cloister is very well preserved with its collection of almost 200 tombstone epigraphs on its walls and its cistern/well in the center of the patio.

Next to the temple we will find the XVI century abbey palace to complete this not-to-be-missed tour.
Leaving the town along the A-1605 north to La Puebla de Roda and leaving it behind we reach our destination perfectly posted on the right of the road.
Dedicated to Santa María de Obarra this monastery sits on the bank of the Isábena river. This Visigoth compound (IX century) is made up of three buildings, so we can imagine the importance it must have had: The Santa María church and the San Pablo hermitage are from the XI century and of Romanic style, While the abbatial palace was built between the XII and XVI centuries. The latter being in partial ruins.
